International Seminar Social Studies of Sport - July, 1st and 2nd - Santiago and Valparaíso, Chile

The International Seminar on Social Studies of Sports, entitled "Major Sporting Events and Challenges for Public Policy” was held in the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso, respectively, between July, 1-2 July. This seminar grew out by collaborative efforts of professionals within the CENTRO DE ESTUDIOS SOCIALES DEL DEPORTE (CESDE) (Social Sports Studies Center), the NÚCLEO DE ESTUDIOS SOCIOLÓGICOS DEL FÚTBOL (Center of Sociological Studies of Football) and counted on the collaboration of three universities of Chile: the University of Santiago (Chile), by the School of Sciences Physical Activity, Sport and Health (ECIADES); the Catholic University of Valparaiso, through the School of Psychology and the University of Valparaiso, in turn, by the Sociological Research Center (CIS).

This seminar was attended by scholars, fans and politicians from different nationalities who during their work and biographical trajectories, focused on the sport as a social phenomenon, legitimate and necessary to be studied.

The seminar aimed to address some of the main themes that relate to the world of sport today. The first day, which was held in Santiago, had as its object discuss safety management in sporting events. For he had Argentine, Brazilians and Colombians academics, who have studied the phenomena safety at sporting venues in different perspectives. Also attended by spectators of Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, which gave us the vision of those who are the true object of public policy. Finally, he counted on the presence of representatives of the State of Chile, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil, who presented the experience and perspectives that sport security policies are built in each of these nations. During this journey, something important was the exposure of the fans as social actors of security at football.

The second day, which was held in Valparaiso, focused on discussing sport, society and culture. For this, first, it counted with a panel that addressed the theme "Gender and Sport" by academics working in Argentina and Canada. Then the following panels addressed the theme "Identity and Territory" in relation to sport; Here participated academic by Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. Finally, the prospect of social intervention developed through sports by calling panel "Sport and Community" with national academics.

The knowledge built from this activity, invites us to generate more and more learning in the field of sports through local practices and knowledge, essential issues to understand to think public policy in the sport from a multisectoral perspective. Even more now that Chile has a new Ministry of Sports, which must systematize their experiences to translate them into future public policy in relation to sport and physical activity. Understanding that generate these guidelines not only affect their own sports field but generate connections to Education, Health, Social Policy, Labor, Tourism, among others.
