Sport in Latin America. Policy, Organization, Management

Routledge recently published Sport in Latin America. Policy, Organization, Management, a collection of essays that were edited by Gonzalo Bravo (West Virginia University), Rosa López de Amico (Universidad Pedagógica Experimental, Venezuela) and Charles Parrish (Western Carolina University).

The editors assembled a group of 30 scholars from all corners of the world that contributed with the 19 chapters of this book that were drawn from cutting-edge contemporary scholarship in management, policy, sociology and history. These chapters explore the role of public institutions, the relationship between sport policy and political regimes, the structure of governing bodies and professional leagues, and the impact sporting mega-events have had on those countries in Latin America that have organized these types of events.

Sport in Latin America. Policy, Organization, Management is the first book of its kind that is published in English that comprehensively examines how sport is organized in Latin America. It includes cases from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Peru and examples from Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

International Seminar Social Studies of Sport

July, 1st and 2nd - Santiago and Valparaíso, Chile

The International Seminar on Social Studies of Sports, entitled "Major Sporting Events and Challenges for Public Policy” was held in the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso, respectively, between July, 1-2 July. This seminar grew out by collaborative efforts of professionals within the CENTRO DE ESTUDIOS SOCIALES DEL DEPORTE (CESDE) (Social Sports Studies Center), the NÚCLEO DE ESTUDIOS SOCIOLÓGICOS DEL FÚTBOL (Center of Sociological Studies of Football) and counted on the collaboration of three universities of Chile: the University of Santiago (Chile), by the School of Sciences Physical Activity, Sport and Health (ECIADES); the Catholic University of Valparaiso, through the School of Psychology and the University of Valparaiso, in turn, by the Sociological Research Center (CIS). 3rd Congress of ALESDE - Concepción, Chile

The 3rd Congress of ALESDE was held in the city of Concepción, Chile in October 24-26 2012.

The main theme of the congress was "Sport and physical activity in the process of Latin American integration". About 120 people from 10 countries presented 80 papers and posters during the fruitful 3 days of congress. We would like to thank you all for the participation and the local committee for organizing this great event.

2nd Meeting of ALESDE - Maracay, Venezuela 2010

In September 16-18 2010, the Second Meeting of ALESDE was held in Maracay, Venezuela, organized by the investigation center 'Estudios en Educación Física, Salud, Deporte, Recreación y Danza' (EDUFISADRED).

We would like to thank the 270 attendees and especially the organization, together with the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela. It was a successful place of discussions and exchange.

First Meeting of the Latin American Association of Socio-cultural studies in Sport (ALESDE)

The first meeting of ALESDE happened on Oct 30-Nov 01 2008 in Curitiba, Brazil at Federal University of Paraná. About 170 people from Latin America attended the event and more than 100 papers were presented. We highlight the presence of Prof. Steve Jackson, president of International Sport Sociology Association (ISSA), Prof. Jay Coakley, member of North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), Prof. Jerzy Kosiewicz, member of the European Association of Sport Sociology (EASS), Prof. Fernando Mascarenhas, president of the Brazilian College of Sport Sciences (CBCE) and Prof. Leila Mirtes, from the Sports Ministry of Brazil.

ALESDE comes true!

During the XXVI Congress of Latin American Sociology Association (ALAS), realized in august 2007 in Guadalajara (Mexico), the Latin American Association of Sociocultural Studies of Sport (Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudios Socioculturales del Deporte - ALESDE) was preliminary institutionalized.
The entity is constituted by researchers of many universities of Latin America with the aim of Sport studying from many sociocultural conceptions. It finds to be recognized as international institution in the academic and scientific area.
